Gift Giving Made Easy
Choosing a gift can be a daunting task for most people. But, there are certain steps that can be taken to assure, or at least give you some peace of mind, that your gift will be appreciated.
First, you need to think about who you’re buying for. If it’s a person that you know, and you think that person has everything, what could you possibly get them—think again! Do they have hobbies or love crafts? People like this will always appreciate anything that you give them to contribute to their hobby or craft. Why? Because you thought enough of them to acknowledge their talent, that’s why! You are contributing to something they love. That also goes for gardeners, business owners, animal lovers, etc. In this way, you’re thinking of that person, not for what they already have, but for WHO THEY ARE!
Also, when looking at who they are, consider the type of person they may be. Is this person a wonderful mother, a good organizer, a person who spends time helping others? This should help in choosing a gift for that person. Give them something that acknowledges what they do. For example, if this person spends a lot of time helping others and gives no time to themselves, give them an item that pampers them, such as a spa basket, or even a day at a spa or golf course or whatever they may need to relax.
If the item you're giving is for someone you don’t know very well, such as a speaker for your organization or items for employees or co-workers, keep it simple. Be conservative in what you give since you don’t know their tastes or lifestyle. Baskets of fruit or other edible items, clocks, paperweights, or certificates are acceptable.
When choosing an item for anyone, you should give yourself plenty of time to think, investigate and shop.
Think about the type of item you need to give, personal or impersonal.
If it’s a person you know, investigate to find out what the person really likes or cares about. They always appreciate something that pertains to their passion. If it’s impersonal, you may be able to find items that you can buy in bulk if buying for a group, or maybe something that can be engraved for an individual, such as for a speaker for a special occasion.
Now, go shop for specific items that you came up with in the thinking process. There is such a vast array of merchandise on the market that you could shop for months and not find anything, if you don’t have an idea of what you want. Once you’ve come up with an idea, check out as many options and items as possible that pertains to your idea.
If you’re a crafty person, give something that you’ve made. People appreciate the fact that you took time out of your busy schedule to make them something. No matter how simple the item is, it is always “just what they always wanted”!
The items that you buy don’t have to cost a lot of money. I’ve found that people appreciate the thought that you’ve put into your giving, and they appreciate the time spent.
We have to remember that it’s the sentiment behind the gift---not the gift itself.
Don’t get bogged down by all the choices available. Just think about who this item is for and why you’re giving it. That should make choosing a gift a lot easier.
